Backward Classes Welfare Department

The Government of Karnataka created a separate "Backward Classes and Minority Department" for the welfare of the backward classes, and minorities in the state and provided for the provision of educational reservations in 1977. In 1999-2000 the Minority Welfare Department had a separate Directorate separate from the Backward Classes Welfare Department.

The Government of Karnataka has taken several measures for the educational and economic advancement of the Backward Classes. 28% reservation has been provided to Backward Classes in admission to professional courses and in state government appointments.

The Department of the Backward ClassesWelfare has a separate headquarters and it has a continuous program to provide social justice, educational incentives and financial assistance to the backward classes and bring them to the main channel of society. Implementing the State Sector and District Sector Programs by the Backward Classes Welfare Department, under the supervision of District Commissioner and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer, District Backward Classes Welfare Officer and Taluk Backward Classes Welfare officers.

In addition to providing reservation for education and employment purpose, the Department of Backward Classes Welfare is implementing various educational and economic schemes for the upliftment of Backward Classes.
